What is pregnancy fetal ultrasound?
Fetal ultrasound (sonogram) is a technique that uses sound waves that is produced by the transducer (image) and forms images of the baby within mother’s uterus. This helps the radiologist to analyze growth and development of the baby and detect if any abnormality is present.
When should pregnancy ultrasound to be done?
- First scan also called dating scan is done at 6-7 weeks- This scan acts baseline scan for growth monitoring of baby and detect any early deviation from normal.
- Second scan called NUCHAL TRANSLUSCENCY scan is done between 11-13.5 weks – to assess the risk of having Few most common genetic problem such as Down’s syndrome.
- Mid pregnancy scan also called Anomaly (Anatomy scan) done at 19-22 weeks- to check any major structural anomaly detectable at this stage.
- Third trimester scan (Growth Scan) at 28-29 weeks- To check baby’s growth and weight progression.
- Doppler Obsteteric scan- Helps to assess blood supply to baby, weight, amount of liquour, any cord around the neck and baby position.

These timings are indicative but your gynaecologist may add or remove any of these according to the individual patients need and health condition.
